We like to see developers putting their creativity to work. Smoke and Sacrifice is an excellent example how you don’t need a huge budget to make an excellent game. There is no doubt that the new release by Solar Sail Games is just that – an outstanding game. Are you ready for an adventure that will take you to a twisted world filled with weird creatures?
This Game Is Beautiful!
We always like to talk about gameplay first, but we will make an exception for Smoke and Sacrifice. The game has exceptional graphics. The developers put in an effort and implemented hand-made illustrations of plants, animals, landscapes, and structures. The result is a beautiful in-game world with one significant downside. Ultra-wide monitors are not supported and neither is UHD. Since this is still an indie game we decided not to complain too much about that.
The main protagonist is female that goes by the name of Sachi. She is beautifully designed and you can also choose different clothing and gear for her as you progress. The in-game world is pre-structured, which means there is no random generation involved. That does affect the replay value, but the good news is that the main quest is long and brilliantly told to keep you interested for days.
Featuring a Narrative-Driven Quest
Although the graphics are cute, the truth is that Smoke and Sacrifice can be a scary game. You might start in a beautiful village, but you will soon head to the dark underworld. In fact, Sachi was forced to give up her little boy and she is now fighting to survive. The in-game world “breathes” which means that other living beings interact regardless of Sachi and her story. That gives the feeling that she is nothing more than a small piece on a huge playing board called life.
As you progress through the narrative-driven quest, Sachi will become better at surviving. She will learn how to fight different enemies because that is not too hard. Basically, each type of creatures has a certain technique of moving and attacking. When you figure out what it is, it will be easy to exploit their weaknesses.
Set Traps for Monsters and Catch Them
Aside from fighting the monsters, you can also set traps for them. This is a far more interesting option that leaves a proud feeling after a successful attempt. As you defeat the enemies, you will collect resources that you need to use in a smart way. Smoke and Sacrifice will not be forgiving in any way. If you go unprepared against a tough enemy, you will die. Climate condition and the smoke that come at night can also kill you, which means you need to keep an eye for save points. They are not that easy to find and the repetitiveness can be a bit annoying if you get stuck in a certain section.
