Life Is Strange is an excellent game, which is why I was delighted when Dontnod Entertainment announced their new release called Vampyr, which finally hit the shelves recently. The title will suggest a theme of the game, but there is far more to it than you could assume. In its essence, Vampyr is a mixture of action, RPG, and fantastic storytelling that will force you to make some hard choices.
Doctor Becomes a Vampire
You will be playing as Jonathan Reid, a doctor who recently passed away in 1918 London and woke up as a vampire. It is not something you can make peace with easily, especially because you are stuck in a post-war city with dangers lurking everywhere. One of those dangers is you. If you want to increase your chances of survival, you need to satisfy your thirst for human blood. Yes, you can kill bad guys and other creatures, but it is the innocents that provide you with the biggest energy boost.
However, killing innocents comes with a hefty price tag. First, whenever you kill a human that means the neighborhood in London gets darker and more flooded with creatures like you. Second, are even capable of murdering someone who has done nothing wrong?
It’s All about Choices
The story of Vampyr is complex and, sooner or later, you will have to make hard choices. You can talk to all characters and some of them will offer you quests for extra XP. The other will reveal their secrets, which will increase the amount of XP that you can earn by killing them. Just remember, you are a doctor and you took an oath that you will help people and not harm innocents.
Fortunately, the streets of London are also full of other creatures that you can take on. The combat is pretty engaging and fun. You can use primary and secondary weapons, as well as vampire powers, which also comes at a price. There is also a bunch of weapons available and finding the fighting style that suits you most will take some time. However, you will enjoy the road as long as you get strong enough to face your rivals.
Solid Graphics and Long Loading Times
Your strength will depend on your development and that will depend on your decisions. Is it possible to save everyone or you need to make some sacrifices to save yourself? While doing either of those, you will enjoy the beautiful graphics this game has. It supports 4K and everything looks impressive on huge TVs. The single downside related to this area is the length of the loading times. Although the game won’t load often, if you want to enter a house or you lose your life, you will have to be patient and wait for everything to load up again. Fortunately, apart from the long wait, there are no other consequences if you die.
