There is something about 2D platformers that you have to love. Perhaps it is the fact that I belong to the generation that had the chance to play NES and Sega Genesis and they remind me of my childhood. Either way, it is nice to see that indie developers have made this genre popular again. The latest contender for its place under the Sun is Light Fall created and published by Bishop Games.
Can You Save the Land of Numbra?
The magical land of Numbra was a safe place for the Kamloops who tried to find peace and escape from wars. However, evil managed to find them and it will not stop until they are destroyed. You will be playing as a God of the land of Numbra. You discover bad news that the other Gods have gone missing and you set on a journey to find and save them.
Light Fall doesn’t give too much information about the main hero in the beginning. The main protagonist is presented with a black silhouette with white eyes that are glowing in the dark. He is accompanied by Stryx, an owl who is also in the role of a narrator. While the sound overall is nothing special, we have to commend the actor who lent his voice to the owl – he did a phenomenal job.
Be Smart with the Magical Boxes
The game is divided into multiple worlds. At the end of each one, you will save a God. The basic controls include jumping, dashing, and attacking the enemies. Our hero will also rely on the help of magical cubes while exploring the lands of Numbra. These cubes can be used in multiple ways. While you are in the air, you can press the jump button again and create a box to land on.
Aside from that, you can use cubes to interact with the environment. That will inspire you to use logic and, for example, place them on lasers so that you can pass safely. The trick is that you need to use the magical boxes carefully. You only have four of them at your disposal before you need to recharge them by coming to the ground.
Vivid Backgrounds and Decent Graphics
The graphics of Light Fall are fairly decent, especially for an indie game. The cartoonish style and vivid colors were the right way to go. The black silhouette of our hero looks beautiful in contrast to colorful backgrounds. The worlds you will visit include caves, forests, swamps, and other landscapes and the visual presentation is not boring at any moment.
The game has two major problems. The first one is that the controls can be a bit unresponsive at times, which can be an issue when you need to react fast. The other issue is that checkpoints can be too far apart sometimes. Considering that the difficulty increases as you progress, that will cause frustration when you need to repeat the same section over and over again.
