The development of the Ghost of a Tale lasted for five years. The modest budget and not many people on the team caused SeithCG to even change the concept a bit in the meantime. Fortunately, the final result is an exciting adventure with a beautiful story being told.
Hey, What Happened to My Mouse Wife?
You will be taking the role of Tilo, a mouse living in Dwindling Heights. Tilo gets separated from his wife Merra and imprisoned for some reason. As soon as he wakes up, he notices that someone has left him a note along with the keys to the cell. You exit the prison and enter a vast world with the primary task of discovering what happened with your wife.
The storyline is incredibly intriguing, but it’s the storytelling that’s fantastic. During your journey, you will speak with non-playing characters and learn about their backstories and the history of Dwindling Heights. Tilo will even sing songs that reveal a lot about the world you are in. It’s a shame, however, that he is not actually singing, but the instrumental music is only accompanied by the lyrics on the screen.
Regardless, you will have a lot of fun as you explore a total of seven areas available within the Ghost of a Tale. Not all sections matter for the story, but if you are a curious mouse, you will search for them to reveal as many mysteries as possible.
Pick Your Costume
In case you haven’t noticed so far, you are playing with a mouse. That means you can’t exactly rely on force. That’s why your vital skills in this game will be stealth and running. The first will come in handy when you need to go by the guard rats. There are a lot of them in Dwindling Heights, but fortunately, they are not too smart or quick. Even if they notice you, you can start running to hide in shade or barrel. Once you do that, they will stop looking for you and get back to their usual routine.
Aside from ways to progress the story, you will also look for pieces that can craft new costumes for Tilo. These new outfits will improve your characteristics in some way. For example, there is a costume that enhances your conversation skills and opens up fresh dialogue options.
The game looks impressive. The developers nicely captured the feeling of being a mouse in an oversized world. There are no loading screens between the areas, and the surroundings vary from the seaside to forest and prison. The only shame is that you can’t fast travel between locations. This can become annoying after a while since the world is not that small after all.
